1. Initial Planning

Overview

This module starts any project correctly, with project initiation, early sizing, project type and related strategy and life cycle, preliminary schedule, and production of the proposal, charter, or document of understanding.

Define project management, itemize the six Vital Signs of a successful project, and relate them to the US ANSI Standard.

bulletInitiate the project with the right participants and an approved Project Charter.
bulletEvaluate the business case, and use it to prepare a preliminary scope statement and objectives.
bulletMake an early estimate of project effort, then use modeling to define the project’s ideal staffing
and duration.
bulletStructure the appropriate life cycle and deliverables for the project’s size and nature.

Compile, publish, and approve an Initial Project Plan or Proposal.

bullet Summarize Initial Planning techniques based on the Vital Signs, or BOK knowledge areas.

Audience
The intended audience of all the Core Modules includes Project Managers, leaders, and key team members (including customers or clients) of medium-to-large projects. Managers of project teams will also receive benefit, as well as Project Management Office staff who have not been exposed to the gamut of project management topics they need to support.
